Japanese Lessons for Adults

Teaching Adults

With my adult students, I have them engage in imaginary everyday scenarios where they would have to use Japanese, like buying groceries at the supermarket, asking for directions, speaking in business meetings, or writing e-mails to colleagues. I also share various aspects of our culture, trying to speak mostly Japanese with them, so as to fully immerse them in the language. I often also do things like incorporate cooking into my Japanese lessons. Food is a universal language that really helps connect a foreign-sounding language to something tangible and real.

Some Of My Students

  • My teenage students come to me for both academics and cultural fun. We explore manga, anime, and cooking, in addition to their school requirements.
  • My college students come so I can give them an edge on their finals.
  • My adult students include those who work with Japanese clients and companies that have very specific needs, like restaurant terminology or international business environments. One of my current clients is a Japanese corporation here in Oregon where I teach Japanese to the English speakers and English to the Japanese speakers, fostering a better collaborative atmosphere between the two groups.
  • I also enjoy teaching fans of the language and the culture who are preparing themselves to travel in Japan.

“Yuko has a great tutoring style. My boyfriend and I are intermediate level adult students and Yuko made us feel like we could converse! She has a wonderful sense of humor, and deep knowledge of Japanese language and culture. We especially appreciated her insights about Japanese idioms.  I look forward to learning more from her.” LeBrie
