Japanese Language and Culture Lessons

日本語!Nihongo – Japanese!

My students are varied: some want to learn Japanese to prepare for a trip to Japan, and others use my tutoring to help them in school. I have tutored elementary through college post-graduate students one-on-one, taught group lessons to all ages, and conducted classes for business people in corporate environments.

Teaching Japanese Language & Culture means I give language classes that also include elements of my culture, like cooking and calligraphy. I teach all about Japanese customs and the aspects of our daily life that can’t be learned in a regular classroom. It is much easier to learn a language when you also know the ins and outs of the culture it comes from. Here, you can learn more about my specific approach to teaching the Japanese language and culture to youth and adults.

Japanese for Travelers’ Preparation

This new course is specially tailored for someone who plans to visit Japan in the near future. Learn words/phrases you will actually use during your stay and familiarize yourself with the essential elements of Japanese culture-all without spending too much time or money.

The course is divided into 5, 75-minute sessions. These can be taken one-on-one or in a group setting and are available either in person or over Zoom/Skype, etc.

Basic Curriculum

Session 1: Getting to Know the Japanese

Session 2: Japanese Culture / Holidays. (Learn about events that you may miss otherwise during your stay!)

Sessions 3 & 4: Starting conversations in Japanese with locals

Session 5: Useful information for getting around (Numbers/Counting System, Street Signs, Food, etc.)

My mission is to make sure your trip will be as much fun and as comfortable as possible; with this course, you will have an easy time moving through the streets and railways of Japan, and may encounter some things only a real local would know about.

EXCERPT from Happy Client Note

We are long overdue in thanking you for arranging a visit to Myoryu-ji! We so enjoyed the temple and all of its architectural wonders and secret stairs…In general, every day was a revelation in Japan, whether it was the food, or a small wayside shrine, or the glory of stepping through the many gates of Fushimi Inari…Your carefully thought out lessons really prepared us for the culture and the people.

À la Carte, Online or Face-to-Face Teaching

Nowadays, you can gain at least a basic understanding of nearly anything easily and for free, wherever or whenever. But if you want to begin to master a foreign language, become comfortable with it, especially the spoken and cultural elements of it, doing it by yourself is not enough.

It is absolutely necessary to have a partner you can practice with; and though it may sound a bit biased coming from one, I believe a native speaker is ideal for this. I would be very happy to help guide you in gaining an understanding of Japan and our language, and I will accommodate my teaching style to your learning needs. Scheduling is flexible. We can easily schedule lessons one at a time, through Zoom/Skype or other means.
